Key Aspects of South African Braai Culture
Cultural Fusion: The flavours reflect a diverse heritage, incorporating Indian, Malay, and African influences
The Fire & Setup: A “proper” braai uses wood rather than charcoal, which provides a unique, smoky flavor and defines the atmosphere. The fire is a focal point for social gathering, often lasting for hours.
The Food: The menu is meat-centric, featuring boerewors (spiced sausage), steak, marinated chicken, lamb chops, and sosaties (skewers). Essential sides include pap (maize porridge), chakalaka (spicy vegetable relish), and braaibroodjies (grilled cheese and tomato sandwiches).
The “Braai Master”: Traditionally, a designated “braai master” (often male) is responsible for cooking, while guests mingle nearby.
Social Significance: Braai serves as a unifying force, crossing racial and social divides. It is central to celebrating national holidays and watching sporting events like rugby or cricket.
Popular Built-in Braai Types & Features
- Material: Available in durable 316 stainless steel (best for coastal areas) or economical mild steel.
- Fuel Types:
- Wood/Charcoal: Traditional units like the 1200mm & 1500mm EmberVault Dual/Double Charcoal/Wood Delux Sizzler.
- Gas Combo: Provides the flexibility of a gas griller and a traditional wood fire with our EmberVault Gas & Charcoal/Wood Braai Combo..
- Standard Components: Most units include an ember maker, steel grid, light fitting, ash pan and warming tray, custom made.
Indoor Braais
- Ventilation Requirement: Must have a properly sized flue/chimney system to vent smoke outside.
- Dual Purpose: Often double as an indoor fireplace for heating the home during the winter months.
- Material: Typically made from hot-rolled mild steel to withstand high heat, and painted to match interior aesthetics.
- Weather Constraints: Must be protected from direct rain, which causes rapid rusting
Popular Braai Options to Consider
- Built-in Combo Units: Feature a wood/charcoal section alongside a gas grill, offering the best of both worlds.
- Drop-in / Freestanding Grills: Ideal for mobile patio entertaining or custom-built outdoor kitchens.
- Accessories Included: Modern units (800mm – 1500mm) come standard with ash pans, ember makers and built-in light fitting placement.
Types of Stainless Steel Braais
Whether you’re building a permanent entertainment area or need something portable, there is a configuration for every setup:
Mobile / Portable Braais: Ideal for smaller patios or camping, these often feature wheels or removable legs.
Built-in Braais: Integrated into a wall or structure, these add long-term property value. They often include features like ember makers and ash pans.
Freestanding / Patio Braais: These units stand on their own or on a cabinet/pedestal, offering flexibility without requiring construction.
Galvanized Mild Steel/Stainless steel Bolt-on Turbo Cowl
Why Choose a Bolt-On Cowl?
Stops Downdraught: Wind power creates a vacuum to draw smoke out rather than letting it blow back into your home.
Easy Installation: Can be easily mounted over brickwork if the metal flue liner does not extend fully or if there is no metal liner.
Weather Protection: Shields the inner chimney structure from rain-induced water damage
Material Options & Durability
Stainless Steel: Recommended for coastal environments or wet conditions. Available in varying grades like 304 (general outdoor use) or 316 (marine-grade for high salt exposure). Stainless steel prevents rust and offers a much longer service life
Mild Steel / Electro-Galvanized: A cost-effective, durable choice for non-coastal, inland areas. Usually sprayed black or requires weather protection

A Bolt-on Turbo Cowl is a chimney or fireplace component designed to enhance updraft efficiency, prevent smoke backdraft, and protect against rain, wind & derbis. The “bolt-on” design features a flange that secures directly onto a brick chimney or flue liner.
